Hameed Yahya Al-Zubeiry is a professor of Applied Linguistics. Currently, he is employed with the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, Al-Baha University, KSA. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from Hyderabad Central University and was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2021. He has published a plethora of research papers in international and national journals of Linguistics & Applied Linguistics Studies. He has reviewed research papers for some scholarly national and international journals. He has supervised some MA theses in Applied Linguistics. He also refereed several scientific products for the promotion to associate professor and professor posts. His areas of interest include interlanguage, discourse analysis, pragmatics, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, ELT.

This course introduces the students to the basic notions of discourse and the development of discourse analysis. It provides them with an introduction about discourse analysis and the different approaches used in the analysis of any piece of discourse (i.e., speech act theory, interactional sociolinguistics, ethnography of communication, pragmatics, conversation analysis, and variation theory). This course aims at introducing the students to the field of pragmatics - the study of language from the point of view of its users, of the choices they make, the constraints they encounter in using language in social interaction, and the effects their use of language has on other participants in communication. Topics include the following major areas: the scope of pragmatics, pragmatic principles and rules, speech acts and their classification, and conversation analysis.

This course trains the students to distinguish between correct and incorrect pronunciation of the English sounds, before proceeding to develop their pronunciation skills. In addition to the organs of speech, the course deals with consonant classification (voicing, place and manner of articulation) as well as vowel classification (tongue height, tongue part, lip shape and length).
