This course introduces the students to the basic notions of discourse and the development of discourse analysis approaches. The course gives an overview of speech act theory, interactional sociolinguistics, ethnography of communication, pragmatics, conversation analysis and thematic analysis.

This course introduces semantic concepts which include: entailment, presupposition, paraphrase, types of sentences, ambiguity, lexical, derivational relations, adjacency pairs, semantic fields, semantic roles, logic, truth conditions and truth values.
