Cytology (or Cell biology) deals with the study of the cellular and non-living components of cells. It includes the function and structure of the cytoplasm, cytoplasmic membrane, cellular organelles, and cytoskeleton. Cytology also covers cell division (mitosis and meiosis divisions), as well as the nature of the chromosomes and molecular basis of the cellular processes. The course also includes studying the composition and function of the components of the different animal cell and plant cell.

The molecular biology course is about genes, their structure and function; therefore, students will learn nucleic acid structure and the mechanism of DNA replication, transcription, and translation in prokaryotic as well as eukaryotes. A central goal is to understand gene regulation at all levels, and the structure-function relationships of nucleic acids and proteins.
