This course is the first semester course in the General Chemistry sequence that provides a thorough foundation of chemical principles. This course is appropriate both as a introductory course for chemistry and other science majors as well as an introductory and terminal course for non-science majors who desire a basic foundation in chemical principles.

This course provide the students with an understanding to the laws of thermodynamics; relationships involving heat flow, work, and energy changes. Grasp of concepts of entropy, enthalpy and free energy; solving problems involving changes in state. Apply equations of state to calculate changes in gas (ideal and non-ideal) gases. Understand phase and chemical equilibrium; apply knowledge to interpreting phase diagrams and assessing system composition under various conditions.

This course was designed to give a broad overview of environmental chemistry. The course encompasses: Introduction to environmental chemistry and pollution, importance of environmental chemistry, chemical processes occurring in the environment, the chemistry of air, water and soil pollutants, classification of hazardous substances, inorganic air pollutants, organic air pollutants, greenhouse effect, toxicology, human health risk assessment, the minimization and prevention of pollution.

The atomic nuclei, atomic structure and composition of nuclei, nuclear systematics and reactions, Nuclear masses and stability, angular momentum of nucleus. Radioactive decay and growth ,radioactive decay processes, alpha, beta and gamma decays. The structure of nuclei, nuclear models, nuclear forces, applications of radioactivity. Fission, charge and mass distribution.

The course encompasses: introduction to water, types, methods used to purification, study of different methods used to desalination of water and economic importance.

The course is designed to provide the students with a chance to gain experience in literature search, selecting research project, writing project title and abstract, selecting key words, introduction, objectives, research significance, and adopting one standard method for references (choosing one style). This course also give the students the opportunity to apply practically the concepts and theories learned during their studies and to do a research project a certain period.
